Not so long ago, building an online business was merely a concept, winning ten, twenty, or more times your salary was a total fantasy, the one story per year that you were reading on the news.

Today, in the age of the internet and digital mondialisation, it is becoming easier and easier to open an online business and is even encouraged by society.

The massive presence on the market of easy-to-use website creation tools, premade website builders, company formation services, and social media have greatly facilitated the transition to an online business.

You don’t even need to have a big capital to start sharing you skills, promoting a brand or launching a new concept.

Here are my 7 reasons to start an online business in 2023.

1) The quest for autonomy

To me, the main reason to start an online business is to reach the point of having full autonomy. Not depending on any company or government for your financial survival is one of the best feelings in the world.

Having your own business means freedom, even if it comes with a lot of work and a serious commitment.

The recent events, say hello to 2020 until now, that occured and are still occuring have made the future very uncertain and created a lot of stress and fear amongst people and companies.

People working in certain fields like tourism, events, restaurants, and entertainment have been severely hit and who knows what can happen tomorrow.

By switching to an online business, you are going on a safer road in some regards, following the trends of the economy.

Autonomy means that you can organize your schedule and time the way you want or at least with more flexibility. Going to the office every day from 9 to 6 is very outdated to me and feels more like modern slavery. A lot of studies are showing that working less is more efficient and leads to better productivity.

Autonomy equals more decision-making power, you’re in charge of the company as it is your own business. No more lousy bosses, incompetent managers, or jealous colleagues. It’s up to you to make the right decision or to take a risk. That’s quite rewarding and a good way to boost your self-esteem and value.

You are building your future and financial freedom altogether. Of course, you may face some challenges sometimes, wanting the business to be fully successful faster but as long as you keep going you’ll reach this paradise you’re looking for.

It’s up to you to set the goal you desire to create the lifestyle you’re dreaming of.

By creating your online business today, you will create a better future, more freedom, and fully scalable income and you can pivot your business in another direction if requires. There is not a single job on earth that will bring you that!

2) You can live wherever you want

Are you constantly dreaming about living in a sunny place, facing the sea every morning? Well, I have good news for you! Owning an online business will give you freedom of movement, you could spend 6 months on an exotic island and the next 6 months in a vibrant and non-stop action city. That’s one of the ultimate perks of an online business.

There is a unique flavor when you sit in a coffee shop somewhere, turn on your laptop and start working. this is flexibility at its best.

let’s say something is going on again on a worldwide scale, similar to what happened the last couple of years, with an online business, you could move to a more relaxed place or somewhere with fewer problems.

3) It’s time to bring your talents to the world

Now more than ever, it is time to shine your light on the world. With everything going on lately, Life and the Universe is pushing people to align themselves with their soul’s desire.

You can start without having a certificate or tons of money. You’re someone who is a natural at coaching people, you know how to listen and how to lead people to a better life, you can start right away, no need for anything else. Just go for it and build your network.

You have an unlimited flow of creativity, great, you can sell your creations or teach people how to get in that flow for themselves.

You can also learn new talents with websites that offer all kinds of courses. Udemy is a great choice. Within a few months, you will add to your value and could start capitalizing on that and create your own business.

There is no shame or pressure, you progress at your rhythm. Create your world, your destiny, it’s a journey to freedom and joy.

4) You don’t need to find your passion to start an online business

This is a double edge statement. But I see some problems and caveats in that too.

Over the years, I’ve observed many people trying to find their passion or purpose so they can quit their job or eventually start a business. The problem is that it can take years, or forever, or it may never come.

If you know exactly your purpose or what passion is waking you up at night and you are convinced and want to do that more than anything else, that’s fantastic, go for it.

But in most cases, I would suggest finding something that can resonate with you, something useful for the planet, or something you’re good at to start an online business.

You may be passionate about fishing every Sunday, but you don’t necessarily want to talk about that all day long and may just want to keep that for Sunday. So opening a business based on that passion is not always a good idea. You’ve got my point and the idea.

There is a limited amount of hours when you can operate with a traditional brick-and-mortar business. At some point, you need to close. An online business never sleeps, people can buy your products or services at any given time, even when you are sleeping. That’s productivity at its best and transforming limited time into unlimited time.

The other reason why it never sleeps is that there are no borders for an online business. You can reach someone living on the other side of the ocean at 4 am, even if you’re in your bed dreaming. That’s the beauty of an online business and an enormous advantage over a traditional business that is, most of the time, limited by the people living around it. The internet has opened up access to a global market.

You make money while sleeping, that’s a sure way to wake up every morning with a big smile on your face.

6) You can automate and make it a passive income business

The good thing about an online business is that you can automate the process. This doesn’t happen the next day you start but over time and with the right approach.

If you can create a system that doesn’t require you to be there, you can turn that business into a source of passive income while not working full-time. You can have more freedom out of that.

For example, having a blog like this one, at some point in the future, I can hire freelance writers and step back from writing every day. That will generate more free time to spend with my friends and family while still maintaining a great margin in terms of profits. Automating is one of the best assets of an online business, even if not all online businesses can be fully automated, you can at least enable some sort of automated system.

Passive income leads to financial freedom, once you have fully set the business to be automated and the profit you’re gaining from it is equal or superior to the cost of your lifestyle, you become financially free and can retire or semi-retire. There will always be a little maintenance on any business, you want to make sure it is running well in the long run.

7) You don’t need much to start

The great advantage of opening an online business is that you don’t need much to start. In most cases, you don’t need to rent a commercial space, have no expensive utilities, and can work from home or in any public place.

Depending on the type of business you want to open, you don’t need to invest so much in the process, no bank loan is needed. Most of the time, you will need a laptop and a few useful programs. That’s a very low entry cost for a business.

Today, with the internet you can even access talented people living on the other side of the planet at a lower cost than the ones available near you.

You don’t take that much of a risk by opening an online business. That should be an incentive for you to jump on that train.

For those who don’t have a massive budget, it has never been a better time to create your own business and create your autonomy. No excuses, go for it!

You need to stay grounded and keep your expectations in check

A little bit of caution is important as it is easy to dream big and be disconnected from the reality of an entrepreneurial business. There are many influencers and marketing campaigns about becoming a millionaire online and while it is true that some people are making millions, it is not the majority. Keep your expectations in check and stay grounded with realistic goals.

Of course, you may end up being a millionaire one day, this is all I wish for people, but right now you are not. Don’t be discouraged if you are struggling or may struggle in the beginning, it will work out.

It is important to dream big but every success starts with the first “online” brick and the next.
